Mustangs finish fourth at Heart outdoor championships

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. -- The Mount Mercy men's and women's track & field teams finished fourth over the weekend at the Heart of America Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Baker.

In all, the Mustangs claimed four individual titles at the event, all on the women's side. Abby Knepper won two of those, finishing first in the 5,000 meter run (18:26.11) and the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a school-record time of 11:26.35.

Bre Nail became the first female since 1981 to win three consecutive Heart of America championships in the same event. The all-American won the shot put on Saturday with a toss of 13.63 meters.

J'Lyn Knutson also took the title in the 1,500 meter run and ran the fifth-best time in school history in the event (4:52.27).

In addition to Knepper and Knutson, several Mustangs earned their way onto Mount Mercy's all-time performance lists. Alyssa Striegel is now second in school history in the discus (43.38m). Brooklyn Johnson recorded the fourth-fastest time in school history in the 400 meter dash (:59.63).

On the men's side, Ty Costigan moved into fifth on Mount Mercy's performance list in the 800 meter run with a personal-best time of 1:57.89.

MidAmerica Nazarene (169.5 pts) and Central Methodist (154.5) earned the outdoor team championships. Women's runner-up was Benedictine (162.75), followed by Central Methodist (132) and Mount Mercy (122). The men's standings had William Penn (117) in second place, then it was Benedictine (110.5) and Mount Mercy (99).
