Bio
19th season at Mount Mercy overall (2001-16, 2021-present)
Scheckel returned to the university after leading the track & field and cross country programs from 2001-16. He was named the Heart of America Men's Indoor Coach of Year after leading the Mustangs to a runner-up finish at the Heart indoor track & field championships. Two of his student-athletes, Keegan Thompson and Luke Nickelson, were also named the Heart of America Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and Indoor Field Athlete of the Year.
Inducted into the Mount Mercy Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017, Scheckel is one of the most accomplished coaches in school history and helped bring the 2018 and 2020 NAIA Cross Country National Championships to Cedar Rapids. After taking over the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs in 2001, he was a four-time Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, five-time MCC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year and six-time MCC Women's Track & Field Coach of the Year.
Scheckel led the men's and women's cross country teams to a total of nine combined NAIA national meets. He coached 20 NAIA track & field all-Americans, including a two-time NAIA outdoor track & field national champion. In all, Scheckel counted 20 NAIA all-Americans, 21 NAIA cross country individual national qualifiers and 48 NAIA track & field national qualifiers.
His teams also earned one of the NAIA's highest honors when the Mustang cross country teams were awarded the Buffalo Funds Five-Star Champions of Character Team Awards in 2009 and 2016. Prior to his coaching career, he was a two-time NAIA track & field national qualifier, the Most Valuable Performer at the 2001 MCC Outdoor Track & Field Championships and set six school records for the Mustangs.
