MARSHALL, Mo. - The Mount Mercy women's soccer team fell to the 23rd-ranked Missouri Valley Vikings in the Heart conference opener, falling by a score of 5-1.
The Vikings opened the scoring early as Lucia Torres Vizcain scored in the eighth minute off an assist from Judit Ferre, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Silvia Maldonado took a pass from Ashley Arribas to make it a two-goal lead, while Fabiana Vazquez scored just before halftime as Missouri Valley took a three-goal lead into halftime.
Just after the break, Marta Carrasco Mesa made it a four-goal lead before the Mustangs got on the board. In the 55th minute, Orla Humphrey took a pass from Emelly Padilha to cut into the Viking deficit. In the 77th minute, Marlene Flores capped off the scoring for the Vikings to make it a 5-1 game.
The Mustangs will return to the pitch on Wednesday at home, facing off against Grand View, with kickoff slated for 5 p.m.
