Mustangs Fall to the Bruins in a One Point Heartbreaker
BELLEVUE, Neb. - The Mustangs fall in a one-point heartbreaker to close out their weekend at the Bellevue Chick-fil-A Classic, falling to host Bellevue 75-74.
Throughout the first half of the game, the Mustangs were unable to get many shots to sink as they were held to shooting 33.3% in the first quarter and 40% at the end of the second. The Mustangs were able to string a few more shots in the third, going 6-11 on shots made. The fourth quarter showed that the Mustangs were not going to go down without a fight as they scored their game-high 31 points in the fourth quarter due to shooting 11-15 for 73.3% on shots made. After being down the whole match, the Mustangs were able to come back from being down 15 points at the end of the third to tie the game with 40 seconds left in the game but fell in the final two to a late Bellevue free throw to seal the game.
Four Mustangs ended the game with double-digit points. Claudia Vanzant was a key player for the Mustangs in the game on 7-11 shooting for 16 points and adding 12 rebounds. Malie Marfil was right behind Vanzant with 15 points on 6-13 shooting, two rebounds, and four steals. Annika Headington was able to collect 14 points on 5-8 shooting, going 4-4 in free throws, as well as collecting six rebounds and three assists. Sam Kiel was able to end the game with ten points.
The Bruins had only three players ending in the double digits for points, with Kaylee Denter leading the team with 20 points on 8-11 shooting. Taylor Denment ended the game with 15 points shooting 5-13, and Gabby Moore with 13 points after a 5-15 shooting performance.
The Mustangs will be back on the court at home on November 5th as they play host to St. Ambrose starting at 7:30 PM.
