Mustangs Earn Shutout Wins Over Yellowjackets

LAMONI, Iowa - Mount Mercy's softball team delivered a shutout sweep of Graceland on Sunday afternoon, taking the opener 9-0 in five innings before sealing the sweep with a 3-0 win in game two.

GAME ONE

Alyssa McElvain turned in a dominant performance in the circle, tossing a five-inning shutout to lead the Mustangs to a 9-0 victory.

Mount Mercy's bats were hot early, plating three runs in the first inning. Calli Janik got things started with an RBI double that brought in Abbey Smith, followed by a two-run double from Mia Petersen to make it 3-0.

Janik extended the lead in the third with a solo home run, and Raquel Trolliet added a two-run single to push the score to 6-0. In the fifth, Annika Headington launched a solo shot to left, and the Mustangs tacked on two more runs—a Smith RBI single and a Janik sacrifice fly—to cap the scoring.

McElvain allowed just three hits and struck out nine to earn the win.

Paige Pialet took the loss for the Yellowjackets, giving up six runs on nine hits over 2.2 innings.

GAME TWO

The Mustangs completed the sweep with another shutout, winning game two 3-0.

After three scoreless innings, Janik broke the tie with her second solo home run of the day. Petersen followed with another solo shot in the fifth, and Rylee Goodfellow added an RBI single to score McElvain for the final run.

Maggie McNally picked up the win, throwing 4.1 shutout innings with three hits allowed and seven strikeouts. Ashley Webb earned the save, striking out five over 2.2 scoreless innings while surrendering just one hit.

The Yellowjackets's Sammi Bradshaw was charged with the loss, giving up three runs on six hits in a complete-game effort, while striking out six.

Mount Mercy (17-19, 7-7 Heart) returns home for more conference action on Saturday, April 12, hosting Peru State. Game one is set to start at 1 p.m.
