Mustangs Sweep Vikings with Strong Offensive Performance

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Mount Mercy's softball team earned a dominating series sweep over the Missouri Valley Vikings at Busse Field. The Mustangs took the opener 10-2 before completing the sweep in game two, 5-2. 

GAME ONE

Mount Mercy took the doubleheader opener 10-2 as they plated six runs in the sixth. Rylee Goodfellow batted a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the victory. 

After a scoreless first inning, the Mustangs struck first, bringing home two runs led by Rylee Goodfellow, hitting a double to left center, followed by Mia Petersen with an RBI single to left. Leading 2-0 through the third inning, the Vikings tied the game at twos as Jordan Pasbrig brought around two runners. 

The tie was short-lived as Annika Headington's two-RBI single to center gave Mount Mercy a 4-2 lead. The Mustangs rallied in the sixth inning, putting up six runs before reaching the run rule to end the game. 

Kennedy Daugherty started the Mustangs' six-run rally with a double down the left-field line that brought in Raquel Trolliet. Petersen brought in the next run for the Mustangs, smacking a single to right, with Calli Janik doubling to right center, scoring two, to put the Mustangs up 8-2.

With the bases loaded, Lilly Wuethrich drew a walk that brought Abbey Smith home. A passed ball by the catcher gave Fionna McLeod enough time to cross home to seal a Mustang 10-2 victory. 

After coming in in the fourth inning with a tied score, Ashley Webb claimed the game-one victory for the Mustangs, pitching a shutout 1.2 innings from the circle and recording one strikeout. 

Morgan Clubb was tabbed with the loss for the Vikings on 4.1 innings from the circle, allowing four runs on seven hits.

GAME TWO

The Mustangs completed a series sweep of the Vikings with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap. 

Missouri Valley put the first run on the board as Taya Brickner hit a two-RBI single to left field to give the Vikings an early 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first. In the bottom, the Mustangs brought the score to a one-run game as Sarah Heick reached on an error by the right fielder that was enough to bring Petersen home. 

In the second inning, the Mustangs extended to a two-run lead as Goodfellow sent the ball long for a triple that plated Trolliet. Daugherty added to the Mustangs lead with an RBI double that brought Goodfellow around and later scored on a wild pitch. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Daugherty's double down the left-field line brought Goodfellow home, sealing the 5-2 win as Maggie McNally held off the Vikings in the top of the seventh. 

McNally was the winning pitcher in the sweep, pitching a complete game, allowing two runs on three hits, and striking out five. 

Chloe Shuff took the loss, going six innings from the circle while giving up five runs and six hits despite striking out four Mustang batters. 

Mount Mercy (13-17, 3-5 HEART) is back on the field, hosting Clarke to Busse Field on Wednesday, April 2, with the first game of the doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m.
