Mustangs Stalled as Eagles Glide to Series Sweep

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Mount Mercy's softball team suffered a two-game sweep against Central Methodist on Friday, falling 15-2 in the opener and 7-3 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Mustangs fell 15-2 in five innings of play. 

The Eagles struck first in the opening inning with Elizabeth Palumbo's solo homer to right. The Eagles added four more in the second, highlighted by Sami Picha's RBI double to left. 

Trailing 15-0 in the fourth, the Mustangs got on the board when Annika Headington's sacrifice fly to right scored Abbey Smith. The Mustangs held the Eagles in the top of the fifth as they would score one more run as Smith reached on a fielder's choice that sent Kennedy Daughtery home. 

Mount Mercy's Alyssa McElvain took the loss in the opening game, giving up seven runs on eight hits in the two innings from the circle. 

Haley Cotter earned the win from the mound after pitching a complete five innings and allowing two runs on five hits by the Mustangs. 

GAME TWO

In game two of the doubleheader, the Eagles completed a series sweep after defeating the Mustangs 7-3. 

The Eagles carried their momentum from the first game into the second as Palumbo launched a two-run homer to deep center. The Mustangs answered in the bottom of the first, led by Smith doubling to left and Calli Janik reaching on an error, both of which resulted in a run. 

Being tied 2-2 in the top of the second, the Eagles extended to a 5-2 lead as Maddie Holly hit an RBI single to left, with Rachel Brandt following with a single that scored two. Later in the sixth, Raquel Trolliet plated the Mustangs' final run of the game with a double to left center that brought in Headington. 

In the final inning of game two, the Eagles sealed the series sweep on a triple by Lauren Hill and a sacrifice fly by Brandt that gave the Eagles a 7-3 victory.

Ashley Webb was tagged with the loss for the Mustangs after giving up seven runs on 11 hits despite striking out five Eagle batters. 

Khloe Perkins claimed another Eagle victory, pitching five quality innings that only allowed two runs on five hits by the Mustangs. Cassidy Brent aided the Eagle win, giving up one run on four hits during her two innings from the circle. 

Mount Mercy (11-17, 1-5 HEART) looks to bounce back in Saturday's doubleheader against Missouri Valley at Busse Field, with game one slated for 11:00 a.m.
