Wildcats Edge Mustangs in Game One, Complete Shutout in Game Two

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Mount Mercy dropped both games of a doubleheader against Baker on Sunday, falling 5-2 in game one and 2-0 in game two. 

GAME ONE

The Mustangs fell in game one as the Wildcats recorded a four-run rally in the sixth inning that sealed their 5-2 win. 

Riley Phillips put the Wildcats ahead early with an RBI double to left, scoring Rachel Pederson. After the second and third innings remaining frozen at 1-0, the Mustangs took their first lead in the game as Annika Headington smacked a two-run double to left. 

After a scoreless fifth, the Wildcats broke the game open with a four-run sixth, led by Savannah Bray's RBI single to right. Ava Greiner, Taryn Hull, and Ashlee Jackman contributed to the four-run inning for the Wildcats, each hitting an RBI single. The Wildcats held the Mustangs in the seventh to seal their 5-2 victory. 

Alyssa McElvain was tabbed with the loss, pitching 5.1 innings that resulted in three Wildcat runs on four hits, despite recording four strikeouts. Kira Baker claimed the win for the Wildcats in a full seven innings from the circle, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out five. 

GAME TWO

The Wildcats claimed the doubleheader sweep, shutting down the Mustangs for a 2-0 game two victory.

Both teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning. Sydney Erlandson broke the deadlock for the Wildcats in the fifth with an RBI groundout, scoring Braxton Stainbrook. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the sixth when Phillips drove in Bray with a groundout to second.

Mount Mercy's Maggie McNally took the loss of the game after a full six innings from the mound, giving up two runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Tess Eubank tossed a two-hit shutout, earning another victory for the Wildcats. 

Mount Mercy (9-15, 1-3 HEART) visits the Viterbo V-Hawks on Thursday, March 27, for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
