Mustangs Open Arizona Trip with a Pair of Wins
TUCSON, Ariz. - Mount Mercy's softball team opened their week in Arizona with a pair of wins, defeating the Nelson Warriors, 12-3, and the Simpson Redhawks, 6-1.
GAME ONE
The Mustangs dominated game one, defeating the Nelson Warriors 12-3 in six innings.
With the first two innings remaining scoreless, the Mustangs scored the first run of the game as Mia Petersen hit a two-run home run in the top of the third. Annika Headington brought in the next run for the Mustangs with a single down the left-field line to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.
The Mustangs did not stop there as Alyssa McElvain hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Sarah Heick. Closing out the third inning, Headington put the Mustangs up 5-0 after stealing home.
In the bottom half of the third, the Warriors answered the Mustangs by putting up one run of their own due to Maritza Rodriguez hitting an RBI single to right center. Heick's two-run double extended the Mustangs' lead to 7-1, scoring Janik and Petersen. Vanessa Philpot put up the final two runs for the Warriors in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-RBI single to bring the score to 7-3.
Janik's sacrifice fly highlighted a five-run sixth inning, sealing the Mustangs' 12-3 win.
Maggie McNally was tabbed with another win after 4.2 innings pitched, allowing only five hits and striking out five Warrior batters. Allie Usleber took the loss, pitching two innings and allowing the Mustangs to score five runs.
GAME TWO
In game two, the Mustangs extended their win streak after taking down the Simpson Redhawks, 6-1.
The Mustangs carried over their momentum from the first game into the second, scoring three runs right off the bat in the bottom of the first inning. Lilly Wuethrich put the Mustangs on the board with an RBI single, with Abbey Smith following up with a two-RBI triple to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Janik added another run for the Mustangs after sending one beyond the fence with a solo home run, putting the Mustangs up 4-0.
The Redhawks responded in the top of the fourth, with Madyson Welch hitting an RBI double to put the first Redhawk run on the board. Heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mustangs put up two more runs due to Maddie Caylor reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Smith.
Ashley Webb reached on a Redhawks error, bringing in Caylor to make it 6-1. The Mustangs shut down the Redhawks in the seventh to secure the win.
Webb claimed another victory after seven full innings pitched and allowing only five hits while striking out five Redhawks. Lily Rojas was tabbed with the loss, pitching six innings and allowing six runs on seven Mustang hits.
Mount Mercy (7-7) looks to continue their streak on Monday, March 17th, for more doubleheader action, taking on Embry-Riddle (AZ) with game times of 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. CDT.
