Mount Mercy Splits Wednesday Doubleheader with Warner
LAKE WALES, Fla. - The Mustangs got back on the winning track on Wednesday, splitting Wednesday's doubleheader with Warner by scores of 3-5 and 4-0.
Game One
The Mustangs (8-10) were paced on offense from a two-hit performance from Ashley Smith, while Calli Janik drove in all three runs in the loss. The Mustangs also saw hits from four players besides Smith and Janik.
The Royals got the scoring started in the second inning as Andrea Rebello drove in the first run of the contest on a sacrifice fly. Thanks to a big third inning, the Royals were able to extend their lead to five. Allyson Becker singled down the right field line, scoring a run. The next batter, Grace Derstine, added an RBI single of her own, followed by another RBI single by Samantha Berube.
In the top of the fifth inning, once Allie Poston and Ashley Smith got on base, Calli Janik stepped up to the plate. Janik blasted a ball over the left field fence, driving in three runs to round out scoring in the game.
Madalyn Morton earned her fourth win of the season, pitching seven innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out five. Kalli Minger was tabbed with the loss, pitching three innings and allowing three earned runs.
Game Two
The Mustangs got back on the winning track in the nightcap of the doubleheader, defeating the Royals by four to earn their eighth win of the season. Mount Mercy saw multiple hits from Keily Ulatowski and Rylee Goodfellow, both going 2-3 from the plate.
Ulatowski would drive in the first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning on a single to left field, scoring Sarah Heick and Ashley Smith, as the game would go to the second inning with the Mustangs holding the edge. Heick would contribute an RBI of her own on a single, scoring Goodfellow. The final run of the game came in the top of the third inning, as Natalie Tecklenburg registered a sacrifice fly to left field, as Ulatowski scored her second run of the game.
Alyssa McElvain registered her first shutout in a Mount Mercy uniform, earning her fifth win of the season. McElvain would pitch seven innings of shutout baseball, only allowing five hits while striking out a pair. Tyler Mooring was tabbed with the loss, pitching two innings and allowing three earned runs.
The Mustangs will return to the diamond to close out the Florida swing on Friday.
