Mustangs Dominate Viterbo with Strong Offensive Display
LA CROSSE, Wis. — Mount Mercy University (3-0, 0-0) delivered a dominant 3-0 victory over Viterbo University (0-5, 0-0) on Wednesday night, with set scores of 25-13, 25-20, and 25-16. The Mustangs showcased a powerful offense with a .364 hitting percentage, racking up 42 kills compared to the V-Hawks' 24.
The Mustangs kicked off the first set with a strong performance. Nikola Kovacevic got things rolling with an initial kill, assisted by Gustavo Kehl Bauer. Mount Mercy quickly took control, powered by pivotal kills from Guglielmo Illotti and Matthew Krzos, extending their lead to 10-3. Despite a brief rally from Viterbo, the Mustangs maintained their grip on the set with consistent offensive pressure, highlighted by a service ace from Sven Krieg, closing the set at 25-13.
In the second set, Illotti was a standout, delivering crucial kills that fueled the Mustangs' momentum. His efforts were complemented by Kehl Bauer, who set up Illotti and Krzos for essential points. Mount Mercy stayed in control throughout, overcoming Viterbo's attempts to narrow the gap. Krzos sealed the set with a decisive kill, clinching a 25-20 win.
Entering the third set, Mount Mercy launched a commanding 4-0 run, featuring kills from Maks Cabajewski and Kovacevic, along with a service ace. Although the V-Hawks tried to close in, the Mustangs kept their lead, thanks in part to a key block by Brian Lynch and Krzos that expanded their advantage to 10-5.
Despite a few service errors, Mount Mercy stretched their lead with effective attacks. Lynch added multiple kills, supported by Cabajewski's assists. The Mustangs' defense was also crucial, with Pere Font Torres and Krzos making significant blocks, leading to a 25-16 set win and securing the match.
Illotti led the charge with 11 kills on 16 attempts, achieving a .625 hitting percentage. Krzos was instrumental with seven kills on eight swings and four block assists. Douglas Fofano contributed with five digs and three kills, while Kehl Bauer orchestrated the offense with 21 assists over two sets.
For the V-Hawks, Owen Collitt impressed with a .625 hitting percentage, five kills, and one block across three sets. Logan Amdur added 15 assists, five kills, and one block, totaling six points. Roman Rzeszutko made his presence felt with eight assists, one service ace, and two digs. Riley Connors chipped in with five kills, two block assists, and six points overall.
Mount Mercy looks ahead to their next matchup against Avila University on Friday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs will host the game in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
