Offense cooks again as Mustangs rout Warriors

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy's offense continued its torrid start to the season, hitting the century mark for the second time in three games in a 103-71 rout of Waldorf in a non-conference men's basketball game on Friday night at Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs (2-1), who have won three straight against the Warriors (0-4), also recorded their highest point total in the series dating back to the 2007 season. Mount Mercy has scored at least 90 points in each game this season, including a season-high 108 points in a win over Harris-Stowe last weekend at the William Penn Classic.

The Mustangs led from start-to-finish, taking a 51-31 halftime advantage and then outscoring the Warriors, 52-40, after the break. Mount Mercy put five players in double figures, led by Dennis McKinney (SR/Chicago, Ill.)'s 27 points. Tyler Kelley (JR/Manchester, Iowa) added 18 points, RoyShawn Webb 17, Bailey Basala (SR/Moline, Ill.) 15, and Melvin Lee (JR/Milwaukee, Wis.) 13. McKinney also pulled down a team-high six rebounds and dished out four assists. Keishun Thomas (SR/Chicago, Ill.) chipped in seven assists, Kelley three steals.

Shandon Hicks topped Waldorf with 17 points. Shaheed Muhammad had 15 points, Lorenzo Smith 10. The Warriors maintained a 41-30 edge on the glass, led by Michael Temple's seven rebounds. Quincy Minor Jr. finished with six assists.

Mount Mercy opens Heart of America Athletic Conference play on Wednesday when Clarke visits Hennessey Rec Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
