Three division 1 ratings highlight state championships

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy dance team took three routines to the ISDTA State Dance Championships on Friday, earning division 1 ratings in all three while bringing home a pair of trophies from the Wells Fargo Arena.

"State is always a fun time for the girls," said Assistant Head Coach for Dance Lainee Uitermarkt. "Most of them danced here throughout high school and they love being able to come back and see their friends. Facing all the other NAIA teams from Iowa gives us a gauge on how tough the NAIA season will be."

Trophies are awarded to the top four teams in each division and the Mustangs were fourth in pom, fourth in hip hop, and fifth in jazz.

"The ladies did a great job preparing for state," said Head Coach Dax Cox. "This is the first time we have competed in all three of the college divisions and to get a division 1 rating says a lot about how hard they have worked. We're excited to get back into practice and start our NAIA season."

Mount Mercy hosts the Mustang Classic cheer and dance competition on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 2:00 p.m. at Hennessey Recreation Center.
