
Schwab Stays Undefeated; Mustangs Sweep Vikings
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Mustangs continue to stay red hot in the home stretch of the season, as the win streak reaches 11 in a Saturday sweep over Grand View, 4-2 and 10-5.
Game One
Five different Mustangs recorded a hit, with four different players recording RBIs. Jeremy Figueroa tallied his hit in the top of the first on an RBI double, scoring Tyler Pecson, as the Mustangs jumped out to an early lead. Brandon Bickford added an RBI single, while Kyle Lehmann tallied an RBI single as the Mustangs took a three run lead after one inning of play.
In the third, Trent Hoogerwerf recorded an RBI single, scoring Figueroa, as Mount Mercy extended the lead to four. The Vikings got on the board in the bottom of the third as Brock Rinehart recorded a sacrifice fly, followed up by an Erik Broekemeier infield RBI single, as the Mustangs held on for a 4-2 win.
Ashton Schwab was tremendous once again on the mound, improving his record to 6-0, pitching a complete game while allowing just two runs and striking out six Viking batters. Ryan Roby was tabbed with the loss, pitching seven innings while allowing four runs and striking out four.
Game Two
The Mustangs saw multi-hit games from Figueroa, Hoogerwerf, Ryan Knowlton, and Drake Frazier, as Figueroa and Matthew Murphy each recorded two RBIs.
Hoogerwerf gave the Mustangs the early lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI triple to right field, scoring Figueroa, as the Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead. In the second, Joel Vaske scored on a wild pitch, stretching the lead to two. Grand View would answer over the next two innings, scoring five unanswered, capped off by a two-RBI single from Nolan Drill.
The rest of the game was all Mount Mercy, scoring the next eight runs. Vaske would score his second run of the game on yet another wild pitch. Frazier added an RBI single, while Figueroa drove in two more on a double as the Mustangs took the lead back. Still in the fourth, Murphy recorded a two-RBI double to left field, while also scoring on a double play. Knowlton rounded out the offense with an RBI double to right field.
Josh Fleming earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing just one hit while striking out two. Drew Conn was tabbed with the loss, pitching three innings and allowing seven earned runs while striking out two.
The Mustangs and Vikings will round out the series on Sunday in Des Moines.
