OKLAHOMA CITY -- Mount Mercy split two games with 16th-ranked Oklahoma City and swept Viterbo on a weekend road trip that saw the Mustangs improve to 7-1 this season.
Friday's contest looked more like a football score, with the Mustangs coming back from a 14-run deficit before falling to Oklahoma City, 20-17. The Stars put up 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning and led, 17-3, after four before the Mustangs began to chip away.
Mount Mercy scored 13 runs over the next three frames to get within 18-16. It was 18-17 before Oklahoma City tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin. Spencer Wiskus (SR/North Liberty, Iowa), Michael Barbato (SR/Colorado Springs, Colo.), and Brandon Bickford (FR/Des Moines, Iowa) each drove in three runs for the Mustangs. Dylan Campbell (SR/McKinleyville, Calif.) (0-1) took the loss.
Saturday's matchup with Oklahoma City (4-5) was a different story as the teams combined for just four runs on 11 hits. Wiskus went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Chili Moseley (SR/Eldridge, Iowa) finished 2-for-2, and Nick Sueppel (SR/Iowa City, Iowa) also drove in a run in a 3-1 Mustang victory. Blake Willenborg (SR/Central City, Iowa) (2-0) was sharp again, allowing only three hits over six innings while striking out four and walking one.
Mount Mercy's offense came back to life in game two on Saturday, a 7-2 victory over Viterbo. Wiskus was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in while Tyler Dahm (FR/Coralville, Iowa) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sueppel, Moseley, Trey Roberson (SO/Lincoln, Neb.), and Lyle Fini (SR/Fort Dodge, Iowa) also drove in runs. Tanner Lohaus (SR/North Liberty, Iowa) (2-0) tossed four no-hit innings, allowing an unearned run while striking out six with three walks.
Sunday's series finale was about pitching and timely hitting once again. Sueppel and Sam Funke (FR/North Liberty, Iowa) each drove in a run to support the two-hit pitching of Kobey Schlotman (JR/Coralville, Iowa) (2-0). He went six innings and fanned eight batters while walking two. Jake Faur picked up his second save in as many days.
Mount Mercy begins an 11-game homestand next weekend, hosting a 4-game set with St. Ambrose on Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7, at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex.
