Bio
Molly Altorfer is the Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator for the Mustangs.
In her role as Associate Athletic Director/SWA, Altorfer serves as a member of the senior athletic administration team and consults on major departmental and university initiatives; participates in providing guidance and direction on Title IX-related interests; assists with reporting of the EADA report and leads sports-associated gender and equity conversations; spearheads departmental fundraising initiatives; supervises athletic programs and coaches; serves as a liaison for the Council for Student Athletes group on campus; and advocates for student-athlete well-being.
Since beginning at Associate Athletic Director/SWA, Altorfer has created the first-ever Women’s Athletic Group within the Athletic Department to engage female members of the team with professional development and social activities; spearheaded the launch of a national academic and athletic honor society, Chi Alpha Sigma, at Mount Mercy to recognize junior and senior student-athletes, and serve as the chapter’s staff liaison; created monthly “Coach Us Up” sessions among members of the Student Life Division, encouraging members of the Athletic Department and Student Services Department to present on timely topics in higher education; and has been selected to represent Mount Mercy and the Heart of America Conference at the Governance Academy for female and minority leaders at the 2023 NAIA Convention.
Altorfer joined the Mustangs as head women’s golf coach in March 2021 after previously serving as the assistant boys and girls golf coach at Cedar Rapids Washington High School. She is no stranger to Mount Mercy, having served as the director of communications and marketing from 2006-09, then assuming the role of assistant vice president for communications and marketing from 2010-13.
In 2021-22, Altorfer led the Mustangs to a team title at the Klocke Classic. Mount Mercy finished 5th of 11 teams in the Heart of America Conference Championships in April 2022, posting a 54-hole total of 1,039. Sophomore Breanna Felderman’s season-long scoring average of 82.18 and three-day total of 254 earned her All-Conference honors for the second year in a row.
The Mustangs had five student-athletes garner WGCA All-American Scholar honors, denoted by a GPA of 3.5 and above for the 2021-22 academic year; and three student-athletes were named to the Heart of America Academic All-Conference team, which requires a GPA of 3.4 or higher, minimum of 60 credit hours, completed at least five semesters with two being at MMU, and participated in a varsity competition. The women’s golf team posted a cumulative GPA of 3.789 for the 2021-22 academic year, earning them honors for the highest cumulative GPA among women’s golf teams in the entire NAIA.
Altorfer, a native of Cedar Rapids, competed in women’s golf for NCAA Division III Gustavus Adolphus and graduated cum laude in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies and political science, then graduated magna cum laude with a Master of Arts in communication and journalism from Kent State in 2013. She serves on the following Boards of Directors: Iowa Golf Association, Tanager Place, and the United Way of East Central Iowa. Altorfer was also chair of the United States Golf Association Senior Women's Amateur Championship Host Committee (2018-19) and chaired the Cedar Rapids Country Club Golf Committee (2016-18). Altorfer is married to Derek Altorfer, and the couple has two children, Kate and Anne.
