MARSHALL, Mo. - The Mustang women's soccer team put up a valiant effort against top-seeded Missouri Valley, ultimately falling in the opening round of the Heart of America tournament, 2-1.
The Mustangs were able to hold a lead in the match, as Orla Humphrey's first half goal gave the Mustangs a one goal edge heading into the halftime break. The lead would last until the 62nd minute in the second half, when Marlene Flores tied the match at one. The game would remain tied until just under two minutes left when Marta Carrasco Mesa took a pass from Judit Ferre as the Vikings ultimately came out on top.
Despite the loss, Manuela Gutierrez had a remarkable game in goal, recording eight saves to keep the Mustangs in striking distance, including six saves in the second half alone. The Vikings would end the match with the edge in corner kicks at 2-1.
