
Mustang Weekly Recap (October 28-November 3)
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: In their lone contest of the week, the Mustangs traveled to Des Moines and took on Grand View, ultimately falling to the Vikings, 3-2. Mary Kate Bendlage tallied 21 kills on 52 attempts, while Jenna Brown was the only other Mustang in double figures with 12 kills. Hailey Hested recorded a game high 46 assists in the loss.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: The Mustangs opened the 2024 campaign at home against Waldorf on Halloween, earning the season opening victory 74-55. Aidan Yamilkoski led all scorers with 19 points on 5-13 shooting, with all five makes coming from beyond the arc. Yamilkoski was also a force off the ball, grabbing eight rebounds and recording five steals. Two other Mustangs joined him in double figures, as Sterling Blakely tallied 14 points while Cameron Williams added 11.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Mustangs split their opening two contests at Bellevue, defeating a good Dickinson State team 97-73 before falling to Bellevue, 75-74. Against Dickinson State, Malie Marfil led all scorers with 24 points on 8-11 shooting. Sadie Struchen added on 20 points on 70% shooting, while Madison Skelton added on another 18 points on 8-11 shooting. Against Bellevue, newcomer Claudia Vanzant was a force on both sides of the ball, scoring 16 points on 7-11 shooting while also grabbing 12 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Malie Marfil (15), Annika Headington (14), and Sam Kiel (10).
WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Mustangs clinched just their second Heart of America postseason berth with a scoreless draw over Culver-Stockton. While owning head-to-head tiebreakers over Park and Graceland, the draw pushed the Mustangs into the conference tournament as the No. 8 seed.
MEN'S SOCCER: The Mustangs made quick work of Culver-Stockton, winning 4-0, earning a spot in the Heart of America tournament. Pablo Lopez netted himself a hat-trick while Chafik Elidrisssi added three assists. Ilija Kosoric joined Lopez in the goal scoring column, while Pablo Ortega Herreros joined Elidrissi in the assist column. The win moved the Mustangs into seventh place for the tournament.
